my Apple headphones last around 6 months then I need another pair because of this issue, sucks

If you wrap the cords around the device and bend the connection to the 3.5mm plug, one earphone is going to stop working eventually, and it's usually the right one.

Unplug them from the iPod/mp3 player/phone, then wrap them around.

Or make a loop like this so the connection doesn't get bent.
