Disgusting tbh, this needs to change.

While I doubt these statistics, I think that trans issues should be more prominent. It's sad to see them snubbed even by those who are gay/lesbian.

Thanks for sharing this! It's sad to see them being discriminated, even in LGB(T?) and feminist spaces, even here in NY.

I have felt strongly about transgender rights ever since meeting one of my friends who is an MTF trans. She is the nicest person I have met but the amount of suffering and abuse she gets is disgusting.

On ATRL, I constantly notice lots of ignorance toward the transgender community which is saddening because I hoped gay people would be more understanding.

What sad statistics

There are so many people ignorant of the struggles of our transgender/gender-nonconforming sistren.

I know it's so sad you would think they would be so understanding but alas

Amen! Gay and lesbian people who discriminate trans people disgust me more than the ignorant homophobes!

The gays need to realize their not the only group within the LGBT community. As with everything else, it starts at home. Until the first three letters learn to be more open to the last letter, nothing will happen. Still, lots of gays and lesbians even have a hard time with bisexual people. We have a long way to go...

And why aren't there more replies?

I think there are two reason why gay/lesbian people may discriminate against trans people...

1.) As a lot of gay people sadly get discriminated against themselves, they discriminate trans people because they want someone to look down on/bully, a smaller minority.

2.) People confuse gender identity with sexuality. A lot of gay people try to understand transgender people because they are also in the 'LGBT' bracket, but they can't, so they begin to dislike them, saying "why couldn't you just be gay" etc, when in fact you gay be trans and gay. I always say it is better to accept, not to understand.

I'm not saying all gay people are transphobic though; a lot of gay people I meet are perfectly accepting and open-minded.

most of the focus on the LGBT+ community is only focused on the g, it's pretty disgusting and sad. the ignorance within the community towards trans* people is awful and everyone needs to educate themselves.

I think those who are LGB discriminate against transexuals because if they are insecure, they hate being lumped in with something seemed "less normal" than gay. It's sad and should not happen. Everyone should support all identities.

I never understood the logic behind a group discriminating against its own. It makes even less sense than hating on other minority groups.

My trans friend said many gay people who she was friends with cut her off when she told her she was trans. She also says she can't live in 'LGBT areas' because there is more discrimination than in other parts.

I also hate how if you are a 'passable' transgender person no one seems to mind, but if you aren't passable yet, people hate you. No matter how you look, all T people are in the same boat and should be treated with exactly the same understanding.

Very sad statistics, it's sad how transgendered people can't catch a break from straights or gays

I relate to a lot of trans people cause at one point i wanted a sex change. I hope none day we will all be treated equal.
