Third Cycle Of ‘American Horror Story’ To Be A Romance, Sarah Paulson & Evan Peters To Return
American Horror Story co-creator/executive producer Ryan Murphy pulled the veil a bit from the upcoming third installment of the FX horror series. At a screening of the season finale tonight, he confirmed that the storyline in season three will be a romance set in modern times, and that Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters will join star Jessica Lange on the next cycle. All three appeared both in American Horror: Asylum, whose finale airs next Wednesday, and the original American Horror Story.

Executive producer Ryan Murphy announced the news at a press Q&A, adding that some other faces from the first year will return. Additionally, just as Season 2 had Bloody Face, Season 3 will have “a great icon — and it’s a woman,” he teased.
As for the setting of the next installment, Murphy said on Twitter that last night’s penultimate episode contained three clues. (TVLine’s best guess: The show is fixin’ to serve up some Southern-fried chills and thrills.)
Other Season 3 teases from Murphy:
- The storyline will consist of “something funnier” because he missed what Jessica Lange’s Constance brought to Season 1.
- Jessica is returning partly because he promised her “complete hair and makeup and the best designer gowns ever” after she had to be so dressed down this season, he laughed. Her character is described as “a glamour cat leading lady.”
- Season 3 is “more historical in nature” and has a “different tone” than Season 2. But, says Murphy, “That’s the joy of the show.”
- Season 3 will take place in modern-day, but just like past seasons, we will see different “time periods” and “there [will] also be different cities.” (It will be set in multiple cities.)
- In casting Season 3, Murphy says, “We want to have some new people come in and some old people come back.” The old people will be faces from season one that weren’t in Season 2. As for the new people, Jessica Lange pretty much has her pick. Murphy says he is looking to cast “actors Jessica wanted to work with.” She gave him names and he’s working to cast them.
- Evan in Season 2 didn’t want to sob as much as he did in Season 1, which Murphy made happen. But, he joked, “Next year he’ll probably go back to playing a sobbing psychopath.”
- Of Sarah Paulson returning, Murphy said: “I know who Sarah Paulson’s playing… She does not” — with a laugh, of course.
Asylum ends its run on Jan. 23; the new 13-episode season will begin production this summer and bow in Fall 2013.
