Nobody expected that some naked caveman will shatter the charts for so many weeks with a
song that in absolutely zero ways similar to the pop songs ruling the airwaves today.
Gotye definitely caught the entire globe off-guard with this phenomenal chart topper. Never
got the hype for this in the beginning, I thought it was too monotonous and boring. But the appreciation ballooned when I heard DJ Mike D's remix which in my opinion is the simplest
but most effective remix of the year.
Last year's #2: Panic! at the Disco, "Ready to Go (Get Me Out of My Mind)"
I cannot blame the ATRLers for naming this the anthem of our generation. It really does
sound like an anthem and that victorious atmosphere it gives just passes through the veins.
The build-up from the beginning to the end is so structurally perfect and Nate's hovering vocal performance is flawless. It's certainly something that will be remembered for years.
Last year's #1: Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks"
The question "What do I stand for?" is settled for now as I break the technical tie between
"We Are Young" and "Some Nights" to place the latter at #1. Words really cannot describe how much I truly and sincerely love this song. It's both a musical favorite and a sentimental
favorite. It never fails to put a smile on my face and I just feel good and happy after every
listen. It's like its giving me the assurance that everything is going to be okay. Weird, but
that's how I feel. There's something more to it than just a song, and that's probably
the main reason why it ends up at #1.
"Some Nights" now joins "Pumped Up Kicks" (2010) and "Airplanes" (2009) as my year-end #1's.
And that's about it! Thanks everyone and see you next year! May 2013 be an awesome year in music!
fun.-dom!
