Why not? She was a hip-hop/R&B artist who crossed over and was universally
pop
ular. She was more successful than Lil Kim, Nicki and Azealia too.

Lol Janet is lightskinned. Whiney was brown, but neither were racially ambiguous (Mariah, Tamar). Them along with Lauryn are proof that dark girls can find success.

but lauryn was not a pop star. She never sang mainstream music nor did she influence pop culture really
