I want to be able to return to posts (and replies to them etc.) when I want to without having to 1) go find the thread if it wasn't a popular one or isn't any more and 2) go through the thread itself to find them. A forum NEEDS a search option, really.

Why is disabling search the only solution people can think of? Is there nothing else, like maybe deleting old threads or something, that could help? I use search a lot, like A LOT.

Please try to think of better solutions before just disabling the search function. I use it all the time when I go back to my or other people's posts, and sometimes to find threads too. Losing it would annoy me so much, because it makes that infinitely more difficult.

normally i would say leave the search on. then again, normally it isnt this awful. if it remains so slow they need to get rid of it, if it is even the problem

Yes search button is important and essential to a forum but not as important as speed. It's not that you search 24/7. Speed is the very basic.
