UK chart changes rule to allow David Bowie song to chart
Quote:
David Bowie's new single 'Where Are We Now?' could still chart in Sunday's Official Top 40, despite earlier reports stating it wasn't eligible.
The track, which is currently number one on iTunes, is available for free when pre-ordering his forthcoming album The Next Day. This would have prevented it from entering the chart.
However, the Official Charts Company has since said that sales of the single track do count towards the official Top 40, meaning 'Where Are We Now?' will enter if it achieves enough sales.
'Where Are We Now?' marks the singer's first new release in over a decade and shot to the top of the download chart less than a day after its surprise release yesterday.
Bowie has also seen a surge in sales of his hits collection The Best of Bowie since news of his upcoming studio LP was announced.
Lady GaGa recently praised 'Where Are We Now?' on her Twitter page, calling it "a moment of bliss".
It really annoys me when the chart changes the rule for specific artists to get higher positions
It's not fair & if the song is FREE with the preorder it shouldn't be allowed to chart anyway
I don't think it has to do with a rule change, at least I doubt they will make free downloads eligible to chart. They just can't see the difference between free downloads and paid downloads, so if they manage to spot the difference it doesn't necessarily has to mean Bowie will get the #1 spot. Because I think iTunes doesn't count free and paid downloads separately too, meaning it could be #1 on the iTunes Singles Chart because a lot people downloaded it for free with the album pre-order and not actually paid for the track only without pre-ordering the full album.
I hope I'm right in that they don't the free pre-order downloads.
I don't think nothings has been changed, it just made it clear that it still can chart but they will only count the sales of the track when it has been purchased alone, not the free downloads when pre-ordering the album.

Basically. Maybe it will go top 10 off the actual individual sales.
