I prefer Mama's Gun to this album, but that's not to say that Baduizm doesn't have its merits. Erykah's combination of cryptic lyrics, soulful (and at times gut wrenching) vocals, and bass-heavy music wouldn't separate it much from the pack of neo-soul albums that were released during the late 90s and early 2000s. I'm not sure what it is to be honest. Maybe it's how heartbreaking some of the lyrics are (Otherside of the Game). Or maybe it's the fact that a thousand listens to some of these songs don't help one in figuring out what the hell Erykah's talking about. Maybe it's just her charm. I'm not sure what it is about this album that makes it so great, but it is. A very deserved spot.
Congrats to all the Mariah Carey albums so far. I'm disappointed Merry Christmas didn't make seeing how it was my #4. I guess I was too into the Christmas spirit when I voted. I should have just voted for her debut to get it higher.

Not your typical rap album. For one, the typical hard core rap beats are ditched in favor of a more soulful and jazzy feel. The subject matter is often grim (Family Business, Cowboys, The Beast), but it's grim and grimy to serve as warning for how corrupt life can be for people living in the inner city. But honestly, the main star of this album is Lauryn Hill. She shows up the boys on most of the albums tracks (Zealots, Manifest) and proves that she is an MC to be taken seriously. This album lost to Falling Into A Valley at the 1997 Grammy Awards. I'm really pressed because this is the last full on rap album to make the countdown. ATRL her flop taste!
The next album is by an act that has multiple entries on the countdown. This act hasn't been seen on the countdown yet. Guesses? I'll post it once we get to the next page.
I heard good things only about Nas. I definitely need to get into him more.
