where do I even start with this album.. it's something I've never heard before. it's very all over the place, Kimbra's trying out all kinds of crazy things and styles and throwing them together, and it took me a long time to be able to appreciate it and just 'get' it. at first glance, it might seem a bit random and messy, but if you take the time to look past the songs' façade, you'll see how multi-layered they are and how much there is to discover. this album oozes with Kimbra's personality and creativity, and I just feel inspired every time I listen to it.
Kimbra has an amazing voice - the backbone of this album, which holds all of the songs together - and the way she experiments with it is astounding, especially because she has this cool attitude that doesn't let you doubt her skills for one second. she knows exactly what she's doing and the result is an intriguing and fascinating mix of indie pop, soul and funk. lyrically she doesn't disappoint either, being very unique but also on point with her writing. this album is incredible for a debut and shows that she's so much more than just the girl on STIUTK.
I literally could not have described Vows better, perfectly done Anna. The album isn't necessarily 'underrated', it's just unheard of. I wish she was more popular - she deserved to smash with this incredible piece.
I can't stand "Somebody that I used to know" and maybe that's the reason why I haven't given an opportunity to Kimbra Going to listen to some of her songs tomorrow
