Hi.I didn't feel the need to defend myself because I know that I have control over my music & how hard I work. Yeah.It was insulting...but I know that I can't control what people think of me. All I can do is keep releasing music (and the visuals that go along with it) that I believe in. Grimes,Charli XCX & I are different. We're peers, but we are completely different people with different music.I don't believe that any of us are being marketed different than what we are. Collaborating with people is MY choice!Throwing bags of money at people didn't get me to where I am & I didn't record songs BY people. I made songs WITH people. There is a difference. I support any artist that is doing their own thing...Especially when they are doing it well. I am not interested in fighting with people about what's real/fake & who has a publicist/who doesn't. At the end of the day it's none of our ****ing business.I know & the people who matter to me most know that I lead my own way & I have nothing to hide. I have been honest about the past 5 years including my failures and how I work. I wish Grimes,Elite Gymanastics, Charli XCX & everyone else the best. Thank you for being so supportive in the last 6 months. It's changed my life. I'm really excited for 2013.
x
Sky
FYI: There isn't a fight happening. People who want to see it happen should read this & learn:
Q: Do you have, or have you ever, felt in competition with each other?
Björk: no way.
Polly: No.
Tori: Never.

No idea what it's about, but she's just using the quote as a parallel to her situation.

She's comparing Grimes, Charli XCX, and herself to Bjork, Tori Amos, and PJ Harvey.

She is responding to Lindsay Zoladz from Pitch Fork
Quote:
“Even though pop music is great, some people are still a bit embarrassed to say that they like it, so it will be really great if we can change people’s perception of it,” the similarly DIY-leaning pop artist Charli XCX said this year. And in a recent article for this site, Carrie Battan detailed some of the shifts that have already taken place, tracing the paths currently being forged by Sky Ferreira, a former major-label pop star gone fascinatingly rogue, and Solange, an artist more content to redefine pop and R&B on her own terms, rather than those of her famous sister.

Grimes reblogged this:

sky ferreira is not a former major-label pop star, she is a current major-label pop star, and there’s nothing DIY about charli xcx. she’s on atlantic or whatever, and she works with outside producers and songwriters on everything she does. like, i love “everything is embarrassing”, i fundamentally do like the idea of projects like those two curating input from outside songwriters and producers the way that radio-focused major-label capital-P pop projects do, but with an eye towards making something that’s more about art and not afraid to risk reaching a smaller audience. like i actually think projects like this, with sky recording songs by cass mccombs and dev hynes or maybe in the future people like caitlin rose recording songs by chris owens or whoever, are really exciting on a lot of levels
but like, please do not mistake charli xcx for grimes. do not talk about a major label pop project who shares co-writers and producers with justin bieber as if they’re at all comparable to someone who writes, records, performs, and produces everything herself. charli xcx is not the result of like an indie/DIY artist allowing themselves to be influenced by stuff that came out of the major label top 40 pop machinery. charli xcx is the major label top 40 pop machinery allowing itself to be influenced by grimes. charli xcx is the major label top 40 pop machinery recognizing that everyone seems to like this grimes person a lot and responding by spitting out a mangled, grotesque approximation of it in an effort to sell you something they own.

And received tons of criticism. So she posted this:
Quote:
I’m going to explain my stance on this whole thing because it’s been totally blown out of proportion.
reblogging this was a bad idea because it’s a lot more negative than anything I would ever write/ think. The ‘case studies’ were Charli XCX and Sky Ferreira, who are both awesome. I have zero beef with either of them and only respect.
Being a female performer in an industry that is utterly dominated by men and gender invites tons of criticism about your appearance and morals and role in the creative process that men would never be subject too can suck. The last thing I want to do ever is fight against women in the industry or make them look bad or discourage them. If I did this in any way, I am deeply sorry. I am very close with the person who wrote the article so I guess I somehow detached myself from the stuff that wasn’t the main thrust (i.e. the authors personal opinions about sky/ charli) because it was a continuation of a discussion we’d been having in real life. I would hate to suggest that either of them isn’t deeply involved in their project or that what they’re doing doesn’t require a huge amount of talent.
The only thing I was interested in communicating was this:
Credit should be given where it is due. The weird middle ground between “indie” and “mainstream” where like, Sky Ferreira and Arcade Fire live takes artists from both streams and sometimes its hard to tell who is doing what. I don’t think either stream is less legitimate than the other.
but they are different, and i think its important to recognize when something is happening independently or when something is happening with a team behind it.
So I’m not saying that Sky and Charli won’t ever produce, or that I’m not completely influenced by major label pop music. I mean, this whole argument stems from an article about how these lines are blurring.
But at the end of the day, even if the packaging looks similar, we are pretty distinct artists, especially in terms of what our roles are in our projects. Sometimes I resent not being credited as the sole writer, producer and performer on my records. I dunno, I think I deserve that.
sky Ferreira and Charli XCX both represent a change in the way that mainstream pop and DIY culture interact and should be given credit for this. I’m really interested in that idea too, but we’re coming at it from different directions and I think it’s important to acknowledge this kind of thing in order to preserve the ‘bottom up’ route, not just the ‘top down’ one. I dunno, I guess thats what I was trying to communicate. I hope this makes sense.
I’m really sorry if anyones feelings were hurt. -_-

Basically, Grimes reblogged a post on Tumblr that dragged Charli XCX and Sky Ferreira for having less input in their music than Grimes. People dragged Grimes for it, so Grimes posted an apology and clarified her stance. Sky found out about it today, and posted the message in the OP in reference to it.

Sky and Grimes are cute, and I'm not here for XCX, but that Tori/Bjork/PJ comparison was a reach if I ever saw one.

Sky comes before Grimes in my hierarchy. Let the queen of DIY/Indie Pop READ them.
It was also kind of catty for Grimes to come at her and Charli like that - especially since they've been "friends" for a while (see: V Shoot)

Queen Grimes can drag all she wants. She might as well be the face of pop as she's one of the few who's taking risks. Sky/Charli are ahead of many other pop artists as well, but Grimes is in her own league sorry to say.
