Discussion: Was Britney really banned from US radio back in 2003?

I just want to know.I mean Britney stans talk a lot about it,but did it actually happened?
Her positions before In The Zone Era...
HOT 100
I'm a Slave 4 U - 27
Overprotected - 86
other singles from Britney didn't chart
Toxic - 9
Eveytime - 15
So positions are even better,but her stans are saying she was banned.why?she obwiously wasn't.did they make exuces for themselves or they want Britney to look controversey in the eyes of society?

She actually was. A company wanted her to choose them to support her tour but she chose a different company instead. Then they removed Britney from all their radio stations' playlists

Yeah, radio stations actually wouldn't play her songs due to some conflict over the tour sponsor I think.

I think it was Legend X who was banned with Dirrty.

But those are amazing chart positions if she had been.

If you ask me, that was HANDS-DOWN the worst mistake of Britney's career. Before that, BOMT shipped 14 million in the States and OIDIA sold 10 million. Britney had two diamond albums and a fantastic reputation under her belt. Her third album sold purely on the strength of Slave alone, and her reputation as a performer. The album got 4 million in the US. It coincided with the advent of illegal downloading, but if Britney had been given a proper chance, she would have sold way higher, maybe 7 or 8 million, AND in result, ITZ (and maybe even Blackout and Circus) would have all sold just a little bit higher than they have now.

I know about Clear Channel and blabla.but i beleive that it's just excuses that Britney stans are making.Her positions were even better and she was always not succesful on HOT 100.because her label was releasing very little amount of physical singles to push album sales.

It's not excatly a ban but Clear Channel took the news about Britney choosing AEG over Clear Channel to sponsor her tour bitterly so they blacklisted her songs on their radio stations across US which is a LOT!

Toxic was blacklisted initially but they pulled it up in 2004 making it a hit.

It was 2001-2004 she was blacklisted on radio. Clear Channel played hard ball cause they wanted to sponsor the EPIC "Dream Within A Dream Tour," but Team Britney chose Pepsi and AEG (which she used again for Circus Tour; they do a good job with her tours) instead. It was quite sad, fans would call into stations and were purposely ignored. It wasn't just Britney that Clear Channel did this to, but she's the most notably person who suffered the most from it.

Well, the chart in 2003 was slowly becoming basically an airplay chart. Not just Britney, but nearly everybody was selling hardly any singles (downloads were beginning to take over, but they didn't get counted in the Hot 100 until 2005).

Britney wasn't banned from EVERY radio station, just the Clear Channel ones I think (which is still a big deal though).

Plus, Britney wouldn't have got that much airplay at the time anyway, since she didn't crossover to rhythmic and urban very much (apart from probably I'm a Slave 4 U), which was how you had to score #1s at the time.

It came after Oops, basically, the entire "BRITNEY" era and a bit of ITZ. They dropped it in 2004, but damage was done and at that point, radio started to be driven by urban music. She's seeing much more radio success since then. It's hard to chart back then on the HOT 100 if you hadn't have much airplay support.

The story goes:

Britney's label had struck up a deal to have Clear Channel sponsor her Dream Within' A Dream tour, but then backed out because of Pepsi offered a partnership that would also include promotion for Pepsi. It was a pretty ****ing huge deal.

Clear Channel got pissed and blacklisted her, meaning stations couldn't really add her into rotation. Songs had to either be requested or played by the DJs on their own accord. Obviously some songs were big enough to make it into rotation on their own, but the ban wasn't lifted until Britney became pals with Ryan Seacrest and performed on his show in 2004. That's why "Toxic" became her first big hit since "Slave," which was the last song to really have a big impact because it was released before the ban was set.

Of course, this is all just rumors from people who have spoken out on it at radio stations.

Billboard has mentioned it before, I believe, stating that Britney was awkwardly missing from the radio for about 2 years which crippled her during the takeoff of the digital age.

The reason why they switched to Pepsi because Pepsi is ready to sponsor Crossroads' promotion as well. They really wanted Britney and during that time, Britney was their best paid spokesperson.
