Notes
*We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, is very different from Taylor's previous efforts in that it is more more pop. Some may see that as a bad thing, but I see that as progression. Taylor has always been pop, so this didn't come as a shock to me. The song is simply irresistible, and catchy. Taylor comes in with a little more sass this time, adding more personality to this song. And for awhile there, this song became a little catchphrase.
*At first I hated Diamonds, I thought everything about it was off and unlikable. But it quickly grew on me. Rihanna's accent shinned bright in the song, as she sang the chorus. I couldn't help but sing "shine bright like a diamond", every now and then. What makes it a good song? Well its laid back, and smooth and different from what Rihanna has done. But the thing that stood out most is Rihanna's vocal progression through the years, this is easily an essential song in her career.
*I found this song by accident as I was doing my daily journey through Spotify. The song combines the rap of Spank Rock, and the singing of Santigold. And I must say, this song feels good to listen too. I'm very into the underground alternative rap seen, and so far this song is one of my favorites. Who doesn't like a positive song, with a catchy hook, nice beat, and a creative video?
*One of the most unique songs I listened too this year. Grimes seems like and artist to look out for, her discography is high creative, but I'm not sure if its for everyone. The first time I heard this, I was struck by her voice, which fitted so beautifully with everything in this track. I can't explain why I like it so much, but it just has it. However, I have no clue what the song is about, all I get it multiple meanings.
*Anything Could Happen seems to get people divided. I hated Lights, I never caught on with all the love for it. However, some people don't like this track. I discovered this song via MTVU, and fell in love. Its a beautiful love anthem, with pounding drums, high pitched oohhs, and glaring synths. Unlike many other love songs, this one has more depth, its a lot more real and personal. The only issue is that it can get repetitive, but at the same time that's the beauty of it all.
*I'm pretty sick of dubstep, I happened to overplay it last year. But once in awhile, there comes an amazing dubstep track like this that sounds greatly done (this happens to be the first of two dubstep songs in my countdown). Something about this just sounds big and impactful, soulful and haunting. Which may be why it has been featured in so many commercials. The song easily grabs, and for some reason reminds me of a more polished version of "The Catalyst" by Linkin Park. Easily this is a standout song for 2012.
