I assure you it's not cheap plastic. It's actually a high grade polymer that in many applications is actually tougher than ceramic/metals. If course if the polymer back annoys you there are several replacement backs made out of alternative materials (like metal and ceramic)
and as far as the skin/'bloatware', you shouldnt worry about that since 1: It has 2GB RAM that more than makes up for any OS Memory usage and 2: every Android flagship device made with ICS in mind will get updates for many years to come, and Samsung in particular are pretty good with phone updates. Of course there are also 1 click tools to remove the bloat and/or update also...
