I'd credit Justin Timberlake for bringing Electro Pop to the US. Toxic was released when? 03? Urban blew up in 04 and 05 and it was after JT did it in 06 is when it finally took off.
Toxic was truly one of the first Modern day Electronic songs to be a hit, especially during the Rap/urban trend in the early to mid 00s. It as well as other songs like Hollaback girl help started the Electronic/Dance trend.
HIAM did start the popstep trend that we have in songs now, but that's for another thread
I forget that Toxic was the only full on pop song that hit #1 in those days. I think my hatred for that song is causing me to be biased.
But my original comment still stands. Umbrella > Toxic > Poker Face > Crazy In Love > Beautiful
Like I said in another post, Toxic didn't change anything. People just got more urban and R&B after that
And Hollaback Girl isn't dance/electronic at all
not really. 2005 brought much more diversity in music. The Killers, Mary J, Gwen, KellyClarkson, BEP. The urban trend was still there for sure but no where near as strong as 2003/04.
And yes it is. Even stefani herself has said plenty of times it's a dance record. Sure it's not house music but it is still Electronic/dance influenced.
Thats a lie. Beautiful is the most covered song listed..
I'll agree with you on this. Based on covers on singing shows, tv shows and by other established artists, Beautiful is probably the most covered on this song. Poker Face is probably the most parodied song as a joke. Umbrella is the most sing-a-long friendly song. I don't know about Toxic and CIL.

The Urban trend started in late 01 with 02 being its start off year.
When Umbrella came out, i was NOT a Rihanna fan. I remember thinking why is this song being praised so much and such a big hit. the song was inescapable. It inspired copies. It made Rihanna a household name, it was covered by numerous artists. the video is iconic. Rihanna wins this hands down.
Toxic was a huge hit with a great video, thats's it.
Poker Face was just a great song, GaGa was more of a phenomenon than the song itself.
Crazy in love and beautiful have not aged well at all.
If the question was, which song is my favorite, i might pick toxic. But the question is which song made the bigger impact, and the answer is clearly umbrella, any other response is delusion or ignorance.
The biggest single by a female of 2004? How when it peaked at #9 on the Hot 100 and on the year end chart #48, I believe Alicia Keys' "If I Ain't Got You" was biggest female song of the year
Toxic rank #5 on the year end mediatraffic chart 2004,
The biggest single by a female on that chart,
While Alicia Keys "If I Ain't Got You" is the biggest female song on USA,
Toxic only peak 9 on USA, but in other country it peak #1 or at least a Top 10 Hits in every country, that's why Toxic rank #5 on mediatraffic chart year end of 2004...

Do you really think umbrella is number 1 though? Sure it had impact on Rihanna's career, cementing her as a legitimate star, but Beautiful was an anthem used by every minority, and Crazy in Love is the most iconic song by Beyonce and served as her intro to her solo career.
There is no way you really believe Umbrella had the most impact. No way.

Mediatraffic IS A FAKE CHART, there's no such thing as a WORLD CHART.

Umbrella was a huge hit no doubt it's what finally launched her into superstardom. But we both know what truly gave her a household name, and it wasnt because of a song.
These songs all made impact. But some of these were more with the artist (Beyonce & Britney) than the actual song itself. I think Poker Face made the most impact as a song itself and for what it did for GaGa as an artist. It's hard to really judge with Beyonce though because she was already huge and I think most people expected her to do great things as a solo artist. Umbrella was another hit for Rihanna, but it was the era as a whole the solidified her. The song helped though. Toxic just assured people Britney could still make hits and wasn't "a pop fad" amidst all the boy bands and bubblegum pop fading shortly before that album.
I mean, no one went out and copied Umbrella, Toxic, Crazy In Love or Beautiful as much as they did Poker Face.

Are you joking? Without Umbrella, there is no poker face!!!!
