Y2K was a huge thing in the late 90s where people thought the world was going to end in 2000, but it never happened. It was used in a lot of pop culture events back then. But has 12/21/12 snatched Y2Ks wig?
The hysteria was much more serious than 12/21/12. So many government and company computer systems were only programmed up until 2000. People thought we would go into an apocalypse.

considering 'Y2K' doesn't actually refer to a world-ending apocalyptic event, i'm guessing you weren't "even alive" for it either
Think about it, a lot of us still remember very well the that 1999-2000 transition.
I don't think anything is gonna be more iconic than that in a long time.
