The way he looks, he's just a really approchable character for people from all ages, kids love Mario and even their grandparents do, that says it all.

That's like asking why Michael Jackson and Madonna are popular.
But I guess it's because he's one of the first video game
"mascots", I guess. Mario is iconic in the truest sense.
