The best art in any form, performance, literature, music, sculpture, painting etc, challenges the viewer to draw connections to past experiences and future ideas... When reading real literature it's a given fact that the author's own intention is the least important aspect, the reader's response and what he gets out of it is the most important... why do people fail to understand that this same strain of thought applies to all art.
At the end of the day it's all just interpretations.To me,I find it pretty pretentious to only put your taste in music as 'art' while denouncing all the other genres.'Substance' doesn't always have to come from a damn ballad,you know.
