No, we get one every decade or so. This one only frightens people more because its been hugely popularized by Hollywood in movies like "The Day After Tomorrow" and "2012" etc. Not to mention the rise in zombie movies.
If it wasn't for the media blowing it out of proportion we wouldn't really be worrying about it, and it'd just be a regular cookie dooms day prediction.
