Because the GameCube was a commercial bomb. It was beaten by the other two consoles of its generation and was like the Wii - behind both in terms of specs. The innovation was strong enough to have it sell massively like the Wii.
And besides; if we had had a GameCube 2, we never would have had the ~100m selling Wii.
Okay now you're really trying it. The Gamecube was legendary and its game selection SH!TS on the Wii.
I mean the selection of iconic games on that system is enough to make your head spin. Unfortunately it didn't smash as much as it should (for various reasons we won't get in to...) and so Nintendo needed to branch out which is what they did with the Wii.
Sadly, GameCube was a kind of a flop so I guess Nintendo wanted to start again with a new brand: Wii. In addition, with the name of Wii they are not obligated anymore to design cubic consoles. That requirement would have been complicated to fulfill with every new console.

The Gamecube flopped bad, but so did the Xbox, also the Gamecube is more powerful than the PS2
Gamecube was a million times better than the Wii though. I mean gamecube has the greatest game of all time on it Paper Mario The Thousand- Year Door. This generation of video games I just stuck to the 360 Wii is to medicore.

Pikmin 2 and Twilight Princess disagree.
But, yes. I'd be down for Wii U graphics with Gamecube titles. The Wii kind of bombed in both of those departments.
