Read the thing at the end of each comic and it explains
I find it more interesting than actually depressing. There is no doubt it's sad though.

Wow, was expecting more after the warning tags and 'this will ruin your day'. Don't really find it sad...

If you're referring to Clarissa's drawing of her family portrait:
Clarissa draws everyone as a big smiling happy family eating french toast, however as you read along you see that it's all a big façade. Clarissa always arrives late to the table to avoid her father (for obvious reasons explained later) and is scolded by her mother and brother. Everyone knows what is happening to her but copes with the trauma in their own way. The mother gives Clarissa extra helpings thinking that it would make her happier, seeing as it is her favorite meal. The much older brother bullies Clarissa, probably because he grew up with his father thus viewing him as a "can-do-no-wrong" figure, and blames the family dysfunction on Clarissa. The middle brother is so troubled by his family's situation that he cannot even articulate a sentence around his father.
When the father arrives to breakfast, everyone is expecting Clarissa to play along with the "happy family" image the mother is putting on. She attempts to go along but gets sick eating the syrup-soaked food. Clarissa cannot comprehend asking her father to be excused at the table due to her fear of him, and vomits on her plate. In a desperate attempt to prevent an uproar she tries to eat the soiled food, but that just disgusts the father and prompts his leaving. The mother and older brother yell that it is all Clarissa's fault and curse her very existence.
It definitely ain't happy.
