I think it's more how they project themselves. Not necessarily the weight at all. Katy presents herself as a sex kitten and like one of the girls who would be a popular cheerleader in high school. Kelly is more the cute nerd that has way too much talent but she's in the same class as the cheerleaders so she doesn't seem as cool.
