I appreciate their willingness to try new sounds, but they should already know it is not working, Octopus is definitely not a good comeback, but still tolerable and enjoyable for a few months. Plus for some unknown reason, this song reminds me of Blur, and that's not a bad thing.
Jack White
"Sixteen Saltines"
Although Blunderbuss is full of new influences, Jack White's second single sounds like a song which could be easily in a White Stripes' effort. It is a rocking tune intense, proving Mr. White can rock as usual.
Electric Guest
"This Head I Hold"
Was this supposed to be a more danceable version of Foster The People? It worked.
The Lumineers
"Ho Hey"
I don't wonder why this became such a hit, it is easy-listening, perfect for take a walk in a park, it is basic and generic as f**k, but also the catchiest song of the year, anyway its appeal isn't enough to make it top 30.
I wouldn't call it original since it is basically following the new "folk pop trend" (Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Mumford and Sons, Of Monsters and Men). You can find a similar song even in the top 10 of Hot 100 (Home).
Love "Sixteen Saltines" and anything Jack White. And Electric Guest! I like that song and album a lot. I mean, it's Jorma Taccone's brother, produced by Danger Mouse! The best!
I kind of disagree that "Sixteen Saltines" is totally a White Stripes-esque song. It bites in a way that most Stripes songs didn't. It COULD fit, but it's more than that. Just my opinion, though.
