There's something about Adele that caused her to sell albums though, and it was that she appealed to a large audience. Its not just as simple as "Since Adele did it, everyone else can to", Adele's total image, music, and persona appeal to a large group of buyers.

Artist like Rihanna, Ke$ha, Katy Perry, and Lady GaGa only appeal to one certain age group, compared to Adele's universal market audience.

Considering 500k a success is not lowering standards it's adapting to the market.

Maybe not 500K but 700K-800K would be ideal. It's a rational assumption. Albums sales are on heavy decline and even the most established acts have failed to reach 500K or struggled to do so.
