Madonna
Introductory Album: Ray of Light
Special Thanks: madonnas
Okay, so this is probably the most surprising on my list (for me) because I never imagined I would or could enjoy Madonna as much as I do. Let me take this chance to defy all the smug Fossildonna stans by saying: the only reason she ranked above The King of Pop is because I've listened to her more and was much less educated in her before 2012 than I was Michael. Now that's out of the way, I can continue.
Where to start... Okay, so I umm'd and ahh'd about her for a long time. Every now and then I'd try playing one of her albums (I downloaded like 80% of her albums in one go) and nothing really caught my ear. I tried the fan favourites, I tried the critic favourites, and I tried the public favourites - nothing worked. Eventually I put Ray of Light on randomly as some background music and the sounds (synths and sea-like sounds) just caught me. The opening track to RoL is incredible - lyrically genius, sonically incredible and probably one of her top 5 songs ever. Naturally an addiction followed, yada yada yada.
Skip forwards a couple of weeks to me listening to Confessions on a Dance Floor post-RoL addiction... now this was a real addiction. I didn't stop listening to Confessions for at least 3 weeks, and it was literally the only music I was listening to. I was just dumbstruck, it was purely addicting, perfect disco music.
I think it was after that obsession ended that I spoke to madonnas, we argued a little but ultimately he advised me on what albums to listen to next, so I moved on to Music. This one took me quite a while to get into - the tracks all have a different style and it the album was messy at first. It was also a lot shorter than the albums I had heard before. After a while I latched on though, beginning to love her versatility and creativity.
Eventually I moved onto American Life, and let me say that this album is so unjustly hated. People seem to judge it based on the title track/lead single, which is wrong because it's the most out of place song on the album. I wish people would listen to the damn thing before saying it's bad, because it's not - it only has 2 truly bad songs (I'm So Stupid and Nobody Knows Me) and contains possibly some of her most meaningful songs (Easy Ride and the flawless X-Static Process). Sure it's a Music-mimic, but it remains a solid album that received the same care that all of her other albums did (well, excusing her last 2 ) and it shows it.
Well I think that's enough for now. I'm very happy I 'found' Madonna - I don't regret it at all. I really hope she puts out another masterpiece before she retires (or dies, whatever comes first ) but if she doesn't I'll be happy with the ~10 she will have left behind.
