Is Madonna Over Rated By Her Peers And ATRL?
I mean I understand she is iconic, but still she is constantly praised like she is the Queen of Pop. Apart from having a lot of hits over a very long career, what has Madonna actually done for the industry? What has she transformed? How has she been such an iconic performer? Yes she is legendary thanks to her acheivements, but has she pushed the boundaries to the extent which some people make out?
I ask these questions because I watch some of her performances and I just don't see it. To me Lady Gaga has already started pushing the boundaries of pop music to a greater extent in some circles.

She was the first woman in music to market herself like a business woman, she used sex and controversy to push the boundaries of the music video platform, and she (along with Janet Jackson) revolutionized the use of sexuality among female pop stars.
People may overstate her talents in singing and dancing, but her influence on the pop music industry is undeniable.

She's not overrated, she revolutionized pop music and she broke the rules and done what no one dared so do your research than come back... and no Lady Gaga did not push boundaries, she's doing what Madonna has done 20 years ago...

ATRL stans for sales.
Yes, she's overrated on here. Deathly, tbh, weirdly enough it's not by her stans though.

madonna had/has crazy control over her career
she introduced white girls being authentically cool to poc
she created a catalog that rivals some of the biggest pop acts ever
she asserted herself sexually unlike any other female popstar before
she created trends on trends on trends
she became one of the first female popstarts to highlight her writing ability
she sold out tours, had hit movies, sold millions of albums
she basically created the US Dance Charts
she set the precendent for female performers to assert themselves, become business woman, write their records, produce, be looked at as sexually powerful, and to have a voice in a male dominated business
she helped create the importance for the music video for future artists
shall i go on?

I'm sorry but if you think LADY GAGA of all artists is pushing pop boundaries more, when she takes plenty of notes production and fashion wise from Madonna. Shows your not very knowledgeble on pop music history. Whether or not you think madonna is overhyped or not is up to you personally. But of course she is legendary and iconic. Madonna came out at a time when female artists couldn't push the sexual limits like their male counterparts. Not letting this slow her down madonna made her own path with embracing/taking control of her sexuality, and no ****s were going to be given. Madonna also reinvented herself numerous times, incorporated many genres in her work, and explored many themes from religion to love to sexual expression. Madonna stood up for gays and their rights years before gaga even attempted to take a shot in the industry. Madonna is the Queen Of Pop and A Legend, who is the most influential female artist of all time. Madonna changed the entire industry for female stars after her to not only express their sexuality through lapdances, skimpy outfits etc... As well as opened boundaries for females to have an no ****s given attitude and still stay on top. Adding to that her sales and critical acclaim can't be denied either, which is also legendary as she is the best selling female artist of all time. Setting trends, and innovative ideas for music videos the list goes on and on Madonna is that chick
Sorry for the long post.

Notice how I said "in some circles" Lady Gaga has pushed the boundaries more in some aspects, there's no denying. Madonna overall obviously has had a greater impact, but Gaga hasn't been around long

Come on madonnas even you can admit the bitch is overrated a bit. I mean I love her and her discography is one of the best I've ever heard BUT there are better discographies out there that just aren't recognized as much as Madonna's discography and it's a shame. Madonna deserves the praise she gets for her cultural impact, but musical impact hasn't been much besides her starting the dance-pop trend with her albums Ray of Light and Music

Also this, Ray of Light and Music was her high points, but compared to other legends I think she was overrated slightly. I think she gets elevated a bit because shes one of the best of the best females in pop, but overall i dont know.

As a female, I never considered the "pushed female pop stars to be more sexual/liberal in their sexuality" to be much of an accomplishment. That, in my opinion, just perpetuates sexism. Especially in the music industry.

Well one thing that disappoints me about Madonna is I feel her last couple of albums have kind of watered down her legacy. They haven't pushed the boundaries at ALL. And they have just got with the trend, did she just give up on being a game changer?
