Google thinks Microsoft is irrelevant + Windows 8 is "meh"
There was a time, not that long ago, when Eric Schmidt considered Microsoft Google's biggest rival.
Today, he is decidedly "meh" about Microsoft.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Schmidt said of Windows Phone and Windows 8, "I have not used it, but I think that Microsoft has not emerged as a trendsetter in this new model yet."
In other words, I'm so not worried about Microsoft that I'm not even bothering to check them out.
Earlier in the interview, he reiterated his belief that Amazon, Apple, Google, and Facebook were the four horsemen of the tech industry. He left off Microsoft, because he thinks the company is irrelevant. Schmidt's not the only one who thinks Microsoft is irrelevant when it comes to personal consumer tech.
The Economist ran a cover story about the warring tech giants and it didn't include Microsoft.
lmao ikr. i wouldn't say they're totally irrelevant yet but they're definitely on the edge. they haven't done anything really new or progressive in years and windows 8 just follows trends rather than setting them

Well I applaud them for actually taking initiative to not just copy Apple with WP and W8 but I think they need to find a new solution to things. Windows isn't the solution to everything hence why the Surface is failing.
This was interesting:

Last year, we concluded by saying, “Fortunately for Microsoft, none of this is going to happen. Windows 8 will reassert the dominance of the Windows PC. Office and other business products will remain corporate necessities, and developers will never be able to ignore Microsoft. Windows Phone will become a viable third mobile platform, the Xbox will continue to dominate the living room, and new products will surprise the pundits who thought Microsoft couldn’t innovate. Even Bing will finally make a profit someday.”
This year, it’s a lot harder to say much of that. Windows 8 doesn’t seem to be reasserting the dominance of the PC. Windows Phone is not a viable third platform. Bing is still burning money. The Microsoft nightmare scenario is actually becoming a reality.
When it comes to the most widely used operating system, they certainly aren't irrelevant. They dominate the desktop industry, and currently the video game industry as well (even thought I'm not a fan of the Xbox brand).
I do find it fascinating that basically a product of the worlds most life-changing company has surpassed it's "creator."
What I mean is, Google wouldn't have reached its top potential without microsoft putting computers into the homes of millions.
If Microsoft hasn't done it, someone else would've. This happens all the time anyways. The iPod heavily surpassing the Walkman. The iPad surpassing the previous tablet PCs. Samsung surpassing Nokia. It's just a trend that always happens. Someone comes along and does something better or makes a better service that people use. Google is punching Bing. And the Android tablets are punching the W8 tablets.

Well, companies are about money. Not market share. Google's worth more than Microsoft and is beating them in the market that Microsoft believes to be the future (mobile, post-PC). I doubt google cares that Windows' market share is so large. The console industry doesn't produce that much money. It's an expensive industry to get in (that's why there's so many first party titles to bring in more money) and some companies are lucky to break even.
