Gaga didn't start fan names. They've been around in genres like k-pop since the 90s and were basically pioneered by glam rock bands.

And yes, they're ridiculous but it's easier to refer to a whole fanbase this way.

britney never called her fans "britney army", it was made up by the stans, i mean we have like 3 - 5 nicknames but 'britney army' is the most popular one.
I realized it was a big problem after Joan Rivers named her fans the "Joan Rangers". Everyone just needs to stop.
And I'm pretty sure it was Mariah who started the trend long before everyone else but as much as it'll make you all seethe, Gaga revived the fan nicknames and almost made it a requirement for artists to name their fans and the media to address the fans as such. Before it was always "X's fans" and now it's normal to address the fans by their given name.
Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber made the naming of fan bases relevant in modern times. Mariah Carey may have called her fans lambs, but it had no relevance in social media. As Bieber and Gaga had their fan bases dominate YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and etc the 'Beliebers' and 'Little Monster' names respectively grew in popularity. That is why acts who have been established since the 90s are now naming their stan bases and thinking their 'notebookers' and 'tea cups' on Twitter.
Gaga never really starts anything, she just makes it relevant again. But yeah, you can't credit her to being the first to do it ever.
As for the question, it is getting out of control.
