Yeah, on pop radio they've been playing dance-pop the whole time, even during 2002-2005. The difference was that the chart was VERY airplay dominated in those years, and the dance-pop songs weren't crossing over to other formats like they do today, so they couldn't do well on the Hot 100. But a song that's on urban, rhythmic and pop at the same time like Yeah! or something gets 150 million AI or whatever, an easy #1.
People look at the Hot 100 from those years, and they think pop radio were playing nothing but urban music, but that's not true. They probably played about 30% urban music, it was still mainly pop and pop-rock they were playing, just they didn't get represented on the Hot 100 since they were the ONLY ones playing it.
Oh well, hopefully Alicia Keys can get top 10.
