I can't imagine a black girl singing "Call Me Maybe" and turning it into a huge pop culture phenomenon. That song is just too bubblegum for the average black singer's voice.

The Grammys added the new Best Urban Contemporary Album for a reason.

People aren't giving Rihanna enough credit. Since Music of the Sun, there has always been a blend of pop and R&B and all types of genres on her albums. Just because her pop SINGLES have the most success does not take away the diversity of her catalogue. I can see justification with her being nominated in R&B categories. And it really doesn't happen often enough for people to be so bothered anyway.

I don't know about it becoming a hit with an average black voice, but surely someone with a voice like Jordin Sparks could have made it a hit?

Amerie and Cassie are partially Asian, but neither look classically Asian. Neither make for all that good of a highly relatable role model for young Asian girls.

I mean, there has to be young asian girls out there trying to make it in Hollywood as pop stars. There HAS to be. It doesn't make any sense that there would be none interested in being a pop singer. So what's happening? They aren't getting signed? They can't even get auditions? The labels don't even try with them? I don't understand.

adldlfjfkj @ Jump being an R&B song. None of those are remotely R&B, their all slightly R&B/urban influenced.

Well, did she receive good promotion under a reliable label? If so, I don't know what to say. If NOT, then you just can't expect a Top 10 to come out of the blue for her when she isn't a mainstream artist. Was it a commercial-sounding dance album? Because naturally if it's too experimental radio won't pick it up.

It doesn't really. The same albums that submit to that category now would have submitted to the other category. It was such a redundant change. It's the same category.

Maybe that stuff is more urban influenced than actual R&B as of right now, but it could be that is where Rihanna wants to take R&B.

Kelly Rowland had Commander but I don't remember if she tried to release it in the US. If she didn't, she should've, it could've been a hit.
