News: Obese mannequin creates controversy

According to The Gloss, a photo posted by a user on Reddit is creating quite a stir. The picture, which features a larger-than-average mannequin, started a flood of comments when the user posted it with the title “Anyone else horrified that they make obese mannequins too now?”

Not shockingly, the photo instantly got attention, with many upset over the idea of an obese mannequin. Comments including “It's like the person who designed this has never seen a fat person before. ‘I'll just make everything...bigger.’

But the question is, why are people in upheaval about an obese mannequin, yet no one is upset about all the Barbie-doll-like stick figure mannequins that currently reside in store windows? Shouldn’t we be upset about those as well?

What do you think about this? Honestly, I think it's about the time we see something like this because not everyone is a size 0 and look super skinny. Let's be real , most people DO NOT look like the current mannequins. When shopping for clothes people want to look that good but most cases the style of clothing is not for every one and a shopping trip can lead to frustration I think it's okay to have mannequins that portray larger sizes but do it with good taste.

Where I work we have bigger mannequins in the plus-sized department. I see nothing wrong with it. They're bigger than the mannequins in the other womens' departments but they still look well put together.

This mannequin looks like a sloppy fat person. You can be fat and still look put together. They can make the thin mannequins proportionate and attractive but the fat ones have to look like this? They need to do better. Whatever store this is.

All that mannequin is doing is telling fat people "It's okay to be fat." and it's really NOT. It would be different if they made the mannequin look cute or well put together but this is just sloppy.

It's not for you to judge if it's okay for people to be fat. That's their decision to make. LOVE your body.

I don't think those kind of mannequins in general are offensive, since they represent a reality for many X-sized people.

But that mannequin in particular is rather disproportionate. Looks like Johnny Bravo with a belly.

It's not the fact that it's an obese mannequin that bothers me, it's the fact that they made it so unappealing and awkward looking. I'm positive there are plenty of decent looking plus-sized mannequins that wouldn't have made the idea seem so awkward and weird and wouldn't have caused the controversy in the first place.

The thinner mannequins are those of particular builds that only a slim portion of the population actually can obtain. The OP mentions the double standard in which no one gives a damn about a size 0 mannequin, which is unhealthy as well because of the potential malnutrition. Whether someone wants to lose the weight they have accumulated is quite frankly no one's business but their own, and they should only heed the advice of their physicians rather than passerbys; some people are in perfect health even if they are a tad bit overweight. I'm not promoting overindulgence either, but weight loss is a conscious decision someone needs to make on their own without the constant shaming.

I don't see anything wrong with an obese mannequin, the problem is that this one is comically disproportional.
