News: Brave Mexican mayor sacrifices herself to save daughter

They described how she begged for her child to be left alone and then appeared to get into her abductors’ car willingly.
The little girl was left wailing as her mother was driven away on Monday November 12.
For the next week, her frantic family waited by the phone for a ransom call that never came.
Gorrostieta’s body – stabbed, burned, battered and bound at wrist and ankle – would finally be found eight days on dumped by a roadside in San Juan Tararameo, Cuitzeo Township.
She left behind her daughter and two sons as well as her second husband Nereo Delgado Patinoran.
Hailed as a heroine of the 21st century, her death has prompted much soul-searching in a country ravaged by violence.
The decision to withdraw her security team in November last year – and her police escort in January – has come under particular scrutiny.
Gorrostieta was elected as mayor of Tiquicheo, a rural district in Michoacan, west of Mexico City, in 2008.
Almost immediately, she received threats. The first assassination attempt came in October 2009 when the car she was travelling in with her first husband Jose Sanchez came under fire from gunmen in the town of El Limone. The attack claimed his life but Gorrostieta lived.
She battled back from her injuries in the face of overwhelming tragedy, but she was not destined to know peace.
The next attempt on her life was just three months later, when an masked group carrying assault rifles ambushed her on the road between Michoacan and Guerreo state. The van she was traveling in was peppered by 30 bullets. Three hit her.
This time her wounds were more severe, leaving multiple scars and forcing her to wear a colostomy bag. She was left in constant pain.
But with unimaginable courage – and despite being a marked woman – she remained defiant to the very end.

My family lives in Mexico and they've seen a lot of violence, I guess it just depends in what area you live in.

Mexico is a ****ing mess. The US needs to intervene once we are financially suitable to, considering that this is taking place on soil that borders our own.

The US needs to mind their own business, look at Florida

Zombies eating their own faces, men killing others at movies premieres, teenagers killing their classmates and then killing themselves, bullying everywhere, sick **** happens in the US.

At least here it only involves drug cartels!

All of my family lives in Mexico City and I go every year well not recently and yeah i've heard alot of stories from some family members about what they have encountered.

As a Mexican, living in Tijuana, I'm very ashamed that the rest of world only sees us as a country filled with violence because of acts like this

My whole family is from Michoacan and Nayarit, and Michoacan isn't doing too well, hopefully something can be done so innocent people like that mayor can stop getting killed.

That is commonplace for any society though. Now I'm not trying to downplay the seriousness of these issues as well, but I feel as if we should focus on the cartel as a whole in conjunction to the above mentioned. The Mexican drug cartel is being lead by former military and they have heavy artillery under their disposal; and under the right circumstances this could become a danger to national security. The people operating in this group are in an organized task-force that could potentially start murdering on US soil as a form of intimidation. The irony in all of this though is that they receive most of their profits in North America because of how valued illegal substances (weed, ecstasy, etc.) are. Perhaps legalizing marijuana can put a hole in their profits but who knows at this point? Wouldn't they just flock to another substance to vend?

What a sad story, poor daughter. Mexico needs to get the U.S, Britain or some other big country involved with this madness. Too many innocent lives are being taken away every day there.

Omg that sucks I know like Michoacan is surrounded by the narcos and it has been like that for several years now it hasn't changed much and the people living in those areas are pretty much trapped there.

It's terrible because all the innocent people are suffering from the mess over in that region

There's constant shootouts where my family lives, I just want it to end already, I don't understand how a human being can kill an innocent person without feeling any sort of remorse.
