I hate when people say 'money doesn't buy you happiness'. Like let's pretend for one week you have no money at all, let's see how happy you are, (if you are even alive) after 7 days. Money makes the world go round and makes us comfortable.
If someone says they don't care about money AT ALL then yes they are lying. However it seems like most of the time when people say they don't care about money they mean they don't care about having more of it than they know what to do with. They just want to have enough to live decently. Everyone cares about money but to an extent.
I don't think they are "lying", it's just the phrase is commonly used without it being totally literal.
I've said "I don't care about money" or something similar before, and I don't care about it when it's in excess. But I do understand that I need at least enough of it to function and to do some of the activities in life that do bring me actual happiness in life.
Most people say the phrase knowing they still need enough money to do things.

I mean everyone cares about money, some just don't look at it as the ultimate ''happiness''.
On the other hand, some would do anything to get more money even if they have lots of them, which becomes more like a disease.
I understand what some you are trying to say. Yes for some gradually building your savings is important because it's not like a huge spike in income and don't know what to do with it. I bet if that happens and for a youngster who doesn't understand the value of money then he/she might spend it wastefully just to regret it at a later time when they really needed it.
Money is really a fluid as in it moves in and out and shouldn't be static to keeps this world goes round and round. But again money is really an invention by men so for some they see money as papers or just products of men, which they tried to not care for much.
People do care about money it's just they do not want to admit it to their friends, otherwise they could look like a plain greedy person if they have enough to live or a little more than enough.
To seem less shallow, lying to themselves because their poor, believing it because their rich or maybe they actually don't care. Personally I think people put too much emphasis on money but it is important and I do care about it a lot.

I don't think they are lying, but you have to care about money to some extent. If you didn't care about money... you wouldn't do too well in life, tbh.
They have to care about it to an extent. If they didn't, then they'd be living in poverty with no clothes or running water or shelter, I mean We're forced to care about money because we need it for practically everything. It doesn't make sense not to care about it.
