Yes and they expect tips along with the job. It's just social etiquette. Questioning tips is like questioning the existence of double standards. That's just how society is. And once again, a tip won't hurt your pocket, but it will help theirs. I mean....

I think its law that says employees who work in positions where they receive tips receive less then the hourly minimum wage because it is believed that they will make up the difference in tips

And to my knowledge, the tip money is collected and divided equally among all the waiters, bartenders, cooks, cleaners, etc. (except the managers who get regular paychecks)

Because they make less than minimum wage.Waiter/waitresses can't make a decent living off just $2.13 an hour.

Also,bad tips can lead to waiters/waitresses doing some NASTY **** to your food on the sly.

I used to work as a waitress last semester and damn do I wish you people who dont tip can go fall off a cliff or get hit by a moving bus.
And, actually most waiters/waitresses actually get paid LESS than minimum wage thank you very much. Many servers get anywhere from $2-$6 hourly. We get paid low because the assumption is we will make up the difference in tips. Thank God I got tipped nicely though because I was friendly with most of the regular customers and the old men used to flirt with me lol.
BTW I used to especially hate the a-holes who come in 10 minutes before closing and just happen to get seated in my section.

That's sad that some people feel like they have to leave tips or else their food is gonna be tampered with.

It's not they're asking you to tip them...if you want to tip them, good for you...if you don't want to tip them, then don't and move on

This is a ridiculous question

A better, reasonable question would be: Why is it that we pay more of a tip based on the price of the food? Whether I go to Applebee's () and spend $50 or go somewhere expensive and pay $200, often times the waiter/waitress is doing the same amount of work. Why do we leave a $10 tip at Applebee's versus a $40 tip at the expensive restaurant? If I order a Filet Mignon instead of a salad, why must I tip the waitress more money because she carried out something more expensive than a salad?

The system in the US requires tipping. I'd like to help a fellow man or woman like another poster said.

Some of y'all are too much, if we have the same mentality as you then I'm scared for this world. LOL

But yes other countries in Asia don't really have tipping at all. Even if you don't tip and expect the world to change overnight, the business owners will try other stuff to downsize his or her workers.
