I laughed at 1:39. She sounds pretty bad. I think her studio stuff is amazing. I could listen all day, but she is terrible live, albeit a few performances. Idk wth they do to her vocals in studio, but they need to figure out a way to embed that ish on her microphones.

They don't do much. "Yayo" and I think "American" was done in one take. Her nerves will always just get to her.

No offence, but her retro singer act is pretty dull.

HaHa, come on, faking? You don't want me to look up at some "faking" Lady Gaga vocals on Youtube.

Do you think she really gets that nervous? I mean she's been performing for quite a while now. If nerves are the case, then she needs to find a way to relax. If she could sound 60% similar to her studio voice I'd be ok with it.

Also, tbh it's not her natural voice. She plays with her voice on studio. Lbr- she's a mezzo soprano, and just lowering her voice (Is she a natural contralto? I really think not though). So it's hard for her to replicate it exactly with live accompaniments.
I wonder how she does Blue Velvet too. The vocals of that studio version was on point.

excuse me, but i doubt you know much about music?! otherwise you would hear that her "deep singing voice" is faked and sounds unnatural. thats why she has all these uncontrolled jumps in her vocals, she can't hit the middle notes.
educate yourself musically before you "laugh your ass off" and make yourself look like a fool.

For such easy vocals, why does she sound like that?

And those who say she can't sing are ignorant. She has proven she can sing in live shows where it's just her and the band on the radio. She's just a very inconsistent person. That bothers you? Nobody cares.

Couldn't agree more
Heck, even my parents like her and they hate mainstream music and films.

Yes. She sounds almost as good as the studio version on Ride live and radio performances tbh.

What Lana does with her voice is something no other contemporary singer does, which also makes it challenging, if not impossible, to recapitulate in live settings. Her switching between deep, low notes, to high notes, works in the studio, using volume modulation, layering, loop-back and stacking of vocals. None of these can be done live, but other singers overcome that by using backing singers with a range of scales, and some back-up tracks that help fill-out and complete the sound stage. For reasons that remain mysterious to me Lana seems to resist these extremely common strategies used by other singers, and behaves as if she could sing her songs without any such help. But her recorded songs are not like that of Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morisette etc., they depend on studio effects and just singing them bare of course makes them not sound as good as on the CD, and leaves many in the audience disappointed. The slight vocal back-up by one of the guitarists on this performance is the first time I have seen her take such help. Finally, she was the only singer who did not use ear monitors for the longest time, which makes absolutely no sense. She began using them more (but inconsistently) over the summer and I think that was reflected in the quality of her recent live performances.
Anyway, while the stuff i have listed above explains some of the flaws in her live performances, there is no excuse for someone of her stature not to make every effort, and take every bit of help (electronic and human) to ensure that she turns out spectacular live performances. More than her festival tour last year, the upcoming 2013 Europe tour is a major headlining tour and she has to hit the ball out of the park, every time. I am hoping!!
