One of the things that really bugs me about people, including people on this site, is that they label things like Aspergers Syndrome as "disabled" or even a disease, and I immediately think wtf? Because, since I was born with Aspergers, I definitely am nowhere near being "disabled" and it definitely not a disease.

Why do people assume that a person with Aspergers, which happens the most highly functioning syndrome on the autism spectrum, as these rather insulting and degrading words as "disabled" or ill, but especially insulting, a "disease".

I mean, 1 in 88 babies have that now, any form of Autism for that matter, and I really think that people just don't understand that having Aspergers doesn't mean you're disabled. I mean, HELLO, Bill Gates had it. And it's been suspected that Albert Einstein and Benjamin Franklin and other people also had Aspergers/Autism.

Seriously, why do people just assume that Asperger kids are disabled and diseased?

There's different levels of Aspergers though, and some are not high functioning. My brother has Autism and although he can take care of himself in certain ways, he's lacking very largely in others. And it's not just with communication either, so he is mentally disabled in that sense. It's all in how you view it, don't let the label offend you either, some people just don't know any better.

What would you say makes you different from other people in your own words then? Hope that doesn't come out wrong, just curious on your personal perspective I'm terms of the differences

It's complicated because there are such varying degrees of symptoms people show and there's actually a lot of debate about what it should be classified as. For the longest time autism and Aspergers were considered disorders or "diseases" that should be treated and cured, but more recently people have actually wanted it to be seen as a disability which suggests that it is something to be lived with and would entitle people who have it to certain rights and opportunities to allow them to assimilate into society regularly, but then some think neither label is appropriate and feel they could just enforce negative stereotypes and limitations.

At the end of the day, just live your life how you want to live it, don't let a label tell you how you should perceive yourself.

What are the symptoms of Aspergers?

Because people think the fact we are different makes us weird or deficient in some way. Aspies don't need special treatment or government money, because we aren't disabled. We're just different than most other people.

I just want to point out, that in Germany (a friend's son who I know has asperger) a childern with Asperger has the right for special advancement e.g. in his first 5 years at school a special teacher was always besides him at class. Praise the Lord for our health care system
