What does being popular first have to do with being inspired by someone?

Copycats and imitators hardly ever make it to the top. The obvious answer is "None", at least obvious enough to me. Every one of those choices are artists and personalities in their own right.

Gaga had a lot of influence on pop fan culture though. So for instance the fact that Katy started calling her fans a name did not come from her, but she adopted it from her fans who began that. (If I remember that correctly. Do I?) The same is most likely true for other artists who do this.
