No, they are not irrelevant. The EMAs is intended to be an indicator of which artists are having success in Europe.
Just because they aren't the Grammys, doesn't mean it's unimportant. It's still a major award show for music.

I am still in utter disbelief that Taylor sweeped the awards at a UK FAN VOTED AWARDS SHOW. Not even shading but didn't her album only do about ~200k worldwide? I wouldn't have been as shocked if it was the VMAs or whatever but the EMAs?

It's not because it's fan voted that it's relevant, you have polls on internet for that or likes on Facebook (and winning =/= having the biggest fan base).
It depends on who is attending really. I always like the atmosphere at the EMA's. It feels like a big concert with all the fans and general public, unlike the VMA's, which is very much focused on the celebs. I realise that made no sense but w/e.
