The Walking Dead is all about testing humanity. It presents questions about what behavior is morally acceptable and justified when it comes to survival, what is the value of life when the world has gone to ****, what does it take to thrive in the worst of circumstances, who can and should be trusted with the power of authority, and is society capable of building itself back again after it has broken down.
The show (and source comic book) has significantly raised the bar on the typically lowbrow zombie genre, which has long been far more niche than mainstream. The fact that TWD has been able to achieve such massive crossover appeal is a testament to that imo.
How is it a Republican show? Because they use guns? I mean I guess the women's roles were more old fashioned in season 2, but that was one of the themes. Andrea's development into a self-sufficient woman was a significant part of her character arc.
In my opinion the show actually does a better job at exploring concepts more introspectively (it has approached faith and religion in that way), whereas AHS tends to be more loaded and preachy.

As is every Ryan Murphy creation. He rehashes the same topics in each of his shows which is a real turn-off.
