These polls show that Gary Johnson is within striking distance of his goal of getting 5% of the popular vote. If he is successful in this, then the Libertarian Party will essentially become the third major party in American politics. A 5% showing would help the Libertarians overcome ballot access hurdles, as well as tap into the Presidential Election Campaign Fund, which normally only goes to Republican and Democratic nominees.
I doubt he'll gain any traction come the next elections. As long as we have the two-party system in place, you can forget about some third party gaining prominence.
I'm really hoping for the Green Party to get somewhere, but I doubt it. Having a three party system is pretty much impossible.
Especially with the electoral college in place. Now if we did away with that and had an actual popular vote election a third party would have more luck. I hope it happens though!
