I realize without a data plan I won't be able to access the full features but I just need the phone to make calls and for my music.

Not sure where you're from, but where I live you can buy the iPhone outright and put any SIM card from any service provider in the phone. What your setup on that SIM card is, it's entirely up to you. The only exception is if you're on a contract.

I am currently so that's where I would be setting this up.

nope. you need a data plan if you're going to buy an iPhone. unless you want to go the whole unlocked route (Where iPhones cost like $649)

iPhone's these days I think require you to have a data plan to use, unless you just buy one without a contract which can cost a nice penny.

There are still flip phones I think that can play music if I'm not mistaken.

If you buy the phone at full price, you won't be required (at least for AT&T since it is GSM). Verizon and Sprint are CDMA carriers so they might force you onto a smartphone data plan anyway. The retail price of the 16 GB version of the iPhone 5 is $650 ($750 for 32 GB or $850 for 64 GB), or you could get a 4S for $550. Hope this helped.

What features are you talking about? If it's the apps you can always have the wifi. But yes, a phone with heavy specs should have data plans otherwise those specs are useless
