Sales figures:
New entries help sales figures
20 May 2007 - 18:42:02
Although sales of albums and singles slipped a little overall last week, new entries provide the highest number one tally on both charts for three week, writes Alan Jones.
On the artist album chart, The Arctic Monkeys three-week reign with Favourite Worst Nightmare comes to an end, with a 39.3% slip in its sales, to 23,950, forcing it to dip to number four behind a trio of new entries – but third placed Funeral For A Friend and runner-up Rufus Wainwright are simply bit part players to Linkin Park, whose Minutes To Midnight registers their best ever weekly sales tally of 94,501. It’s the first hard rock album to top the chart since last July, when both Lostprophets and Muse reached number one. Muse opened with an even higher first week sale of 115,144.
The distillation of 14 months in the studio, the writing of 101 songs, and the recording of 17, Minutes To Midnight is Linkin Park’s third studio album, and features a dozen of those tracks, debuts emphatically at number one. The band’s second studio album, Meteora, made a similar start in 2003, debuting at number one on sales just 615 lower at 93,886. Despite its rapid start, Meteora’s sales slowed considerably and its current career tally of 545,795 is dwarfed by the band’s 2000 debut Hybrid Theory, whose first week sales of 238 copies have since swollen to 1,225,905, even though it never climbed higher than number four.
Minutes To Midnight’s release sparks big increases in sales of Linkin Park back catalogue, with the main beneficiary being the aforementioned Theory, which climbs to number 65 – its highest position for exactly five years.
Rufus Wainwright’s fifth album Release The Stars debuts at number two on sales of 28,653, maintaining the Canadian’s habit of peaking higher with every album: his self-titled 1998 debut reached number 171; 2001’s Poses got to number 132; Want One peaked at number 88 in 2003; and Want Two made number 21 in 2004. Wainwright sold 240,000 albums before Release The Stars though his only hit was I Don’t Know What It Is (number 74 in 2004). Going To A Town, from Release The Stars - jumps 68-54 this week, on sales of 2,406 downloads.
After consecutive number 12 albums with their first two albums, Casually Dressed And Deep In Conversation (2003) and Hours (2005), Welsh post-hardcore favourites Funeral For A Friend secure a best-yet number three debut for their new album Tales Don’t Tell Themselves on sales of 25,108. The album, from which first single Into Oblivion peaked at number 16, is a concept album about a fisherman, hence titles like All Hands On Deck, The Sweetest Wave and Rise And Fall. It achieved 11% of its sales in Wales, where it is number two.
Yesterday (20th) was rock legend Joe Cocker’s 63rd birthday, and he received a welcome present in the form of confirmation that new album, Hymn For My Soul, sold 17,100 copies on its first week in the shops to debut at number nine. Tomorrow is the 39th anniversary of Cocker’s first album chart appearance. Hymn For My Soul is his 11th charted album, and most successful since Have A Little Faith (number nine, 1994). It was galvanised by Cocker’s TV performances on Parkinson and Later With Jools Holland, and Radio Two plays.
There’s a new number one on the compilation chart this week. Massive R&B – Spring Collection 2007 debuts at number one on sales of 21,955 copies to end Now! 66’s six week stint at the apex. This is the fifth Massive R&B release and the second number one, emulating the very first (May 2005) in the series, and halting an ever downwards sales spiral. The four previous releases were joint UMTV/Sony BMG projects, but the new album is a solo UMTV project.
Meanwhile, R&B also rules the singles chart, where Rihanna’s Umbrella collaboration with Jay-Z becomes only the second single to reach number one on downloads alone this year, emulating Mika, whose Grace Kelly did so in January.
Umbrella started slowly, and ranked eighth on the first midweek sales flash, issued on Tuesday, but gradually ate away at main rival Makes Me Wonder (Maroon 5) turning an initial deficit of nearly 6,000 into a victory by a margin of more than 7,000 by the end of the week.
Rihanna has previously had three number two hits behind Oasis, Gorillaz, Gnarls Barkley, McFly and Shakira feat. Wyclef Jean, but Umbrella is her first number one and sold 34,164 downloads last week.
Umbrella is the first single from her third album Good Girl Gone Bad, and her lucky charm is Jay-Z, who raps on the song. At 19, Rihanna has six Top 40 hits to her credit but Jay-Z has 28 since his March 1997 debut, and previously topped the chart with girlfriend Beyonce and Déjà Vu last August. His latest success means Beyonce’s current Beautiful Liar collaboration with Shakira dips a notch to number three on sales of 19,160, which take its career tally to 174,858.
Rihanna is the second artist from Barbados to have a number one single. A song called Barbados topped the chart for Typically Tropical in 1975 but the Eastern Caribbean island, home to around 280,000 people, had to wait until 2001 for one of its natives (Rayvon) to have a number one, helping out Shaggy on Angel.
After making a record 54-1 leap on America’s Hot 100 a fortnight ago, Makes Me Wonder by Maroon 5 was on track for a 19-1 jump here before Rihanna and Jay-Z showed their muscle.
Makes Me Wonder is the introductory single from Maroon 5’s new album It Won’t Be Soon Before Long, their first for five years, and becomes their highest charting single to date, beating This Love (number three) and She Will Be Loved (number four). Its sales last week – 27,120 – were slightly higher than their previous best of 26,758 achieved by She Will Be Loved at its peak.
Spider-Man 3 is a box office smash, despite generally poor reviews, and exposure for Snow Patrol’s latest recording, Signal Fire - which is heard over the closing credits - help to make the song the group’s highest charting hit to date, exploding 17-4 following physical release on sales of 18,493. The highest charting of the band’s eight previous Top 40 hits was their first, Run, which reached number five but their biggest seller and longest running hit is Chasing Cars, which peaked at number six and eased past 300,000 sales last week.
When One Night/I Got Stung by Elvis Presley slumped 1-20 – the biggest ever retreat from number one - in February 2005 it was already deleted. There’s no such excuse for McFly, whose Baby’s Coming Back/Transylvania equals that record dive this week on sales of 7,290. McFly’s previous biggest dip was 1-9 with Star Girl last year. If McFly’s single had falled one place fewer this week, and Maroon 5 had climbed one place further, they would have swapped places, a unique event for two records in positions so widely separatesd. The newly released "tour edition" of McFly’s latest album, Motion In The Ocean, which adds a DVD of a Wembley gig, sold 11,256 copies last week, to return the former number one album to the chart at number 14.
One of the more interesting sideshows played out in the chart was among Eurovision entries. Many made quick impressions on midweek sales flashes but, while Scooch’s dismal performance helped pushed Flying The Flag (For You) down 508 on sales of 13,442, only one of their 41 rivals sold enough downloads to claim a Top 75 place – the Ukranian entry Dancing Lasha Tumbai by Verka Serduchka, the ‘drag’ identity of Andriy Danylko.
Runner-up in the competition, it was the third most popular track among UK phone voters, behind the Greek and Turkish entries but far outperformed them, and all others, on downloads with sales of 4,843 earning it a number 28 singles chart debut. Russia’s Serebro was the only other entry to track more than 1,000 downloads, earning a number 97 debut with Song 1 on sales of 1,077. Competition winner Marija from Serbia came close, with Molitva selling 941 copies to debut at number 112.
Also making a showing, Sarbel (Yasoou Maria, the Greek entry, number 114); Fatals Picards (France, L’Amour A La Francais, number 144) and Sopho Khalvashi (Visionary Dream, Georgia, number 175).
Many Eurovision fans opted instead to buy the comprehensive Eurovision Song Contest – Helsinki 2007, which moves 38-16 on the compilation chart on sales of 3,581. It’s the seventh year an album of all entries has been released here, and with one exception, it has improved on its chart performance every year. Previous years and peaks: 2001 (number 40), 2002 (number 33), 2003 (number 32), 2004 (number 30), 2005 (number 30) and 2006 (number 17).
Nadia & Cherise from Big Brovaz are very busy people. As well as being members of the R&B act, who missed out on representing the UK in Eurovision with their contender Big Bro Thang, Nadia & Cherise are achieving success as Booty Luv. Their first hit in this guise, a cover of Tweet’s Boogie 2Nite reached number two, and this week sees follow-up Shine, a cover of a posthumous Luther Vandross single, jump 25-10 on sales of 10,877.
