Skyfall Reaches for $88M Weekend in US
Update:
Quote:
James Bond #23 is looking to open in North America with a $32M Friday and $80+M first weekend. But rival studios think Sony is low-balling – and that Friday’s domestic debut for James Bond #23 is around $33M (including $4.6M from Thursday’s IMAX screenings and Friday midnights) and the weekend around $88M. No matter who’s right: this is absolutely the biggest-grossing 007 movie ever in the string of films since 1962 – not adjusted for inflation or higher ticket prices or IMAX premiums – especially now that it’s received a coveted ‘A’ CinemaScore from audiences. “Skyfall delivers. Blows away $67.5M on Quantum Of Solace by a lot,” a Sony exec gushes to me. “Quantum was -4% from Friday on Saturday. Hopefully, Skyfall will use its ‘A’ Cinemascore to fuel Saturday and push it up even further.” Skyfall‘s 3,505-run wide release in U.S. and Canada set a new record for the global franchise. I’m still waiting for an updated number from Sony for overseas plays after it opened first overseas October 26th. As of Wednesday, the Sam Mendes-directed, John Logan-scripted, Daniel Craig-starring actioner had taken in $321M internationally But Hollywood now is betting that the worldwide total will be a gargantuan $500+M through Sunday - shaken, not stirred.

On the cusp of its U.S. opening, Skyfall just keeps blasting ahead at the box office. The 23rd James Bond film today passed The Dark Knight Rises to become the UK’s highest-grossing film of the year. With a local take of £57M ($91.07M), the Eon Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment movie is now also the biggest Bond picture of all time in Britain, outplaying Casino Royale‘s £55.6M ($88.8M) haul in 2006. The Sam Mendes-directed Skyfall opened in 587 cinemas in the UK and Ireland on Friday October 26, beginning its overseas rollout at the same time. As of Sunday, it had taken $287M internationally and was breaking records in most territories. It starts IMAX showings in North America today and opens wide tomorrow.

Skyfall has grossed $59.9 million during its first seven days in the U.K. and Ireland. That impressive tally gives Skyfall the first-week record in the U.K./Ireland. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 previously held the record with $57.6 million in its first seven days.

Sony Pictures’ and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s Skyfall, the 23rd film in the James Bond series, opened overseas in 25 markets and grossed a staggering $77.7 million, #1 everywhere. Setting the pace was of course the UK, which opened to an enormous estimated $32.4 million (£20.1M). Smashing the all-time Saturday attendance record Saturday, this is the biggest opening of 2012 and the 2nd biggest Friday-to-Sunday opening weekend in history there, behind just the 3D Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2. This launch was 76% bigger than Daniel Craig’s first turn as 007, Casino Royale, and 30% bigger than Quantum Of Solace. Of the $77.7M on Skyfall, IMAX is estimating a weekend gross of $3.5M in 79 locations in 15 territories which include the UK, France, Russia, Korea, Bulgaria, Middle East, Kazakhstan and Brazil.
