A truly distinctive actress. She has a considerable amount of quirk (namely, her scratchy voice, peculiar mannerisms and often unconventional delivery) for a woman who, at one point in time, was one of the most sought after actresses in Hollywood. I can't think of any actress, past or present, quite like her, which only makes her fall from grace all the more tragic. She will be/is one of the unsung talents of her generation.

I'd cut off my right arm if it would guarantee that someone would give her a major role in a legitimate project. But who writes decent roles for fortysomethings who haven't helmed a successful picture in over a decade? Poor Winona. Written off by the industry for a scandal that, had it occurred just a decade later, probably would have been buried under headlines about insert attractive starlet's recently leaked nudie pics.

When did the incident happen? I think she was 28, she was on the top of the world, Dracula, Allien and then the shoplifting, tragic but I think it was choosen by herself to stay away from the limelight after that.

I see her in a line with Diane Lane - Winona Ryder - Natalie Portman - Kristen Stewart(almost as tragic as Winona, I saw her in Panic Room and thought one of the best performances of a 12 year old, but after that I was more and more disapointed)

I watched Girl, Interrupted the other day and thought she was brilliant in it (despite her awful hair, but that wan't her fault).

I always thought she was really old though. I remember watching Edward Scissorhands and thinking it was from the early 80s so I thought she was around 50 when she filmed Black Swan (as she was made to look older), I was majorly surprised to hear she was so young. Regardless, she's an incredible actress.
