Pink Friday:Reloaded Tour Reviews [UPDATED]
Quote:
HER look is so outlandish I sometimes find it hard to think of Nicki Minaj as a real person rather than a cartoon character. But when the rapper landed in Liverpool last night she was large as life and twice as nasty – in the hip hop sense of course.
Trinidad-born, New York-raised Minaj rivals Lady Gaga for her love of wacky dressing and she wheeled out quite the wardrobe for the third night of her Pink Friday Reloaded tour, changing costume five times.
There were no repeats of the wardrobe malfunctions seen in Manchester and Nottingham, although her costumes were so skimpy it would be hard to tell – thank heaven for nipple covers.
Following an assured and very well received warm up set from former X Factor finalist Misha B (that girl is going places) and an expletive-laden performance from rapper Tyga, Minaj appeared on stage emerging from a space rocket in a black bra and tutu skirt, her hair long and blonde. It would later switch to pink and curly before morphing into a candyfloss affair.
No expense had been spared for the show which featured an LED backdrop, incredible dancers, fire throwers and even a cannon that shot T-shirts into the audience.
Over five segments Minaj took us from hardcore/even harder to understand rap, to pop, to dance, to dancehall (harking back to her Caribbean roots) and back to pop.
All of her biggest numbers were present, in a set that stretched to more than 30 songs and came in at just under two hours. Beez on a Trap, Va Va Voom, Pound the Alarm and Moment For Life were among them plus several others featuring lyrics far too naughty for me to repeat in a family newspaper.
Because, make no mistake, Ms Minaj’s lipstick may be bubblegum pink but there is nothing sugary about her.
So explicit were some of the song lyrics that I was surprised at the number of pre-teens in the crowd. Minaj acknowledged the fact herself saying: “If you’re in school make some noise,” before offering up some advice to young women: “Don’t be giving away your cookies to every Tom, Dick and Harry."
The loudest cheers of the night were reserved for her biggest hits the quadruple platinum selling Super Bass and finale track Starships, while the waving of an LFC flag won over at least half the sellout crowd.
It was, as Minaj herself might say, a helluva show. My only criticism would be the lengthy interludes between segments. The tour DJ worked almost as hard as Minaj did.

POUND the alarm – Nicki Minaj is on fire. Not literally but certainly figuratively, as the bootylicious rapper put in an electric performance for her first solo gig in Newcastle.
The pint-sized poppet with the potty mouth has long been a fixture on my playlist and I was, admittedly, excited to see what she would deliver in the flesh.
So too it seems were the sold out crowd on her opening night of two dates in the Toon, who gave out piercing screams as their heroine emerged on stage in a pink spaceship.
Thanks to her eccentricities, Miss Minaj seems to have accrued an almost maniacal fan base who were out in force for her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded tour, resplendent in painfully short shorts and a rainbow of various coloured wigs. Though I was a little surprised at the amount of children at the gig - these lyrics are not for young ears.
With all the madcap bouffants, crazy clothing and cartoon-esque faces, it’s easy to forget that Nicki actually has a cracking voice.
But it shone as she worked her way through a catalogue of infectiously good hits to the backdrop of a slick and expensive-looking set.
So much so, that she didn’t indulge in as much booty-shaking as I would have expected. Instead, she seemed to concentrate on the vocals for high-octane tracks such as Beez in the Trap, Super Bass and new single Va Va Voom while her lithe dancers put in super-flexible performances around her.
Though it’s the fast-paced toe-tappers which have earned Nicki her name in the music industry, her more pared down tracks are some of my favourite on her albums.
Right Thru Me, Fire Burns and Save Me and their emotionally-strewn lyrics, which she performed in a floor-skimming pink coat and candy floss pink wig, were highlights of the night and proved that she is an artist with both substance and style.

The 29-year-old opened her show by emerging from a bright pink rocket and performing some of her best known rap tracks including Bees in The Trap and Did It On Em.
The star shows off her distinctive rapping style to its full potential, playing with rhymes, accents and voices. As well as performing her fast paced raps, Minaj and her team of dancers put on a show that any girl band would be proud of, and although she sang live, she never seemed out of breath.
During the middle of her set she slowed things down, to perform her more lyrical hits Save Me, Marilyn Monroe and Right Thru Me. These showcased her powerful singing voice, and prove she can do more than just rap.
It was however, her upbeat pop tracks which were the most popular with the audience, as everyone leapt to their feet to dance to Pound The Alarm, Turn Me On and of course Starships.
Minaj who is famous for her girly outfits and pink wigs did not disappoint and had five costume and wig changes. They were however, a little too long, and the audience did get restless during these breaks.
The show had a real fun factor as in addition to the pink space craft and zany outfits, Minaj lazed in a sparkly bath tub, jumped into a pink inflatable Rolls Royce and had T-shirts fired at the audience through a glittering rocket launcher.
The rapper ended her show as it began and wearing a white tutu and a silver captain’s hat she jumped back into a rocket to return to planet Minaj.

If you thought Madonna was a pop chameleon, you’ll be dizzy watching Nicki Minaj.
The most successful female rapper of all time or a crossover hip hop/pop sensation? Simple Trinidadian good time girl or hard-nosed New York music tycoon? Grrrl power champion or pneumatic Barbie doll? Will the real Nicki Minaj stand up?
And the Arena saw all sides of Minaj’s schizophrenic talent with a day-glo hurricane of a show that surely blew the autumn leaves off any trees within a mile radius.
Manchester’s own Misha B raised the bar early on with an assured 20-minute support slot. It was a performance full of confidence that showed off the 20-year-old X Factor semi-finalist’s amazing vocal range and included debut single Home Run, tear-jerking new track Do You Think Of Me and her fabulous cover of Adele’s Rolling In The Deep. With her album out later this year, it won’t be long before she is back at the arena in her own right.
When she does I hope she doesn’t keep a crowd waiting. Fans had an hour to kill before Minaj touched down on stage, stepping out of a pink, flashing rocket ship – unnervingly like the one Wallace and Gromit flew to the moon – in a low-cut top and black puffball skirt to I Am Your Leader.
It kicked off a rap-centric clutch of tracks including Roman Reloaded and Beez In The Trap, showing off Minaj’s distinctive flow, playing with voices and accents. Make Me Proud was dedicated to the girls who she urged to ‘stay in school and be ambitious – I don’t like dropouts’.
After the first of five costume changes it’s a denim puffball skirt and low-cut top for new single The Boys and Super Bass before she is wheeled on in a blingy bathtub wearing a Marilyn Monroe wig and pink overcoat for Save Me.
Minaj almost drowns inside a pink inflatable Rolls Royce on Automatic before big hitters Pound The Alarm and Turn Me On. Then she returns dressed in black and banters with the audience and reveals that when in school she would pretend she was from Manchester, though the accent she tried was more Walthamstow than Wythenshawe.
And for an encore that came close to 11.30pm, she donned an overlarge pink captain’s hat and white tutu to pilot Starships before blasting back to planet Minaj.

Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj performed her first arena tour at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham on Sunday night. Her album ‘Pink Friday Roman Reloaded’ will be released 19th November this year.
As would be expected, Nicki Minaj had a huge production on the night which included an array of outfits, aninflatable car, fireworks, dancers, and Nicki’s DJ who succeeded in livening up the crowd due to Nicki being 45 minutes late, and leaving her fans otherwise known as ‘barbies’ waiting.

As the lights dimmed down in the arena the crowd went wild chanting ‘Nicki!’ and the countdown to her coming on stage was on the big screens. Finally, after a long wait she arrived in an extravagant pink rocket on stage surrounded by pink smoke, which an embarrassed stage hand had to usher off.
She performed the majority of songs from her upcoming album such as ‘Beez in the Trap’, ‘Whip it’, and the chart hit ‘Pound the Alarm’ ending with ‘Starships’ for the big finale. However, in between songs*Nicki was delayed leaving fans anxious and in anticipation.
The female rapper lyrically executed her songs well, and performed them energetically fully entertaining the crowd – but even Nicki was subjected to the dreaded wardrobe malfunction. Mid-way during her show, one of her skimpier outfits revealed too much and the rapper * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * was trying her best to avoid slippage.
Nicki joked about it afterwards saying “You guys have seen my boobs before…You won’t tell anyone, will you? What happens in Nottingham…stays in Nottingham!” her fans responded. That was not the only glitch – Nicki also had trouble with an inflatable car which proved hard to keep stable. At one point, the rapper disappeared from view but was immediately helped up by one of her male dancers.
Nicki’s wigs were a big hit too, as most of the standing crowd were sporting vibrant coloured hair pieces which seem to be Nicki’s fashion trend. There was also some commotion as quite a few fans fainted and paramedics were rushed to the scene. The workers at the arena did their best to control the situation handing out water and pulling fans out of the crowd.
Nicki also did her best to do a stereotypical British accent ‘Would you like some scones and tea?’ she said to the crowd, the majority of which screamed with laughter.
After her main songs off the album had been covered, Nicki mentioned her old school roots and rapped her not so well known songs when she first started out. Her loyal fans rapped along with her, and she gave a heart warming speech to the crowd stating that the night was “emotional” for her.
“This is the first show of my first arena tour, I will always remember you guys. And I mean that. This isn’t fake. This is real,” Minaj stated.
Nicki’s connection with her die-hard fans was amazing, and she definitely gave it her all throughout the concert.
The show was exciting to watch, Nicki didn’t disappoint and as her tour travels around other venue’s in the UK, I can honestly say that her devoted fans will be satisfied.
