This is just a theory of mine, not fact. But I think the reason gay men receive a little bit more hate is because we live in somewhat of a misogynistic and womanizing society that we are still trying to escape from. People may subconsciously feel like men are the superior to women (look at women's rights in history, look at how women get paid less to do the same jobs as men) and associate masculinity as superior to femininity. (HOLD ON WAIT! I am not saying Lesbian = Masc and Gay man = Fem, I am saying that ignorant people associate gays and lesbians in terms like that. - And there's nothing wrong with a fem gay man or masc lesbian, I am a fem gay man myself). Many people have this idea in their head that a Male leaning more towards feminine behavior is like taking a step back in the wrong direction (I feel because of the long history of women not being seen as equals in our society) and of course since they do not know any better, they associate male homosexuality with deviating from gender norms. Thus more noticeable hate. When I was in High school, I kind of noticed double standards about the LGBT community and how straight people percieve them. It seemed to me like lesbians (stud or not) were received better than males who were openly gay. I am not saying anything in this post is factual, but just my perception. Any one want to chime in and share what they think? I know my response may be confusing to some.
