The singer insisted that the teen performer has the ability to leave the group and embark on a hugely successful solo career and should step into his place as he ages and moves on.

"I remember being 21, seeing George Michael, who's ten years older, and thinking, 'There's a vacancy there'," Williams told Metro.

"So there must be a Harry Styles looking at me, going, 'He's over the hill now'."

The former Take That star confessed that he is "obsessed" with being successful and that his recent stint with his old bandmates gave him the confidence to return with a stronger solo project.

"I'm obsessed... with pop music, being a pop star, being successful, not being a has-been," he said.

"A lot of things happened with the boys. The most amazing thing was that we sorted out the past," he added.

"Also, I had 27 minutes to myself in a stadium, where I remembered how to do it. That was the big shot in the arm." (source)

Ironically, Zayn is becoming a far more popular media/ public persona than Harry is.

If anyone is going to go solo, it's him, although I doubt ANY of them could be successful as solo artists.

How can anyone say this when Harry looks like he's gonna puke every time he has to sing on TV? Like that's with 4 other people , alone he'd probably lock himself in his dressing room huddle in a corner shaking and crying.

True. I see a lot of Robbie in him. The music they make in One Direction is all manufactured pop candy. If Harry made something a little more "bad boy" like Robbie, I think it would be a success. The problem with being in a massive group is that eventually it declines. The fans grow up and so do the group members. I think Robbie escaped that though and made it on his own. I wonder if the same will happen for 1D.
