My fave is Rihanna, but Toxic was a much bigger hit than We Found Love (both in the US and worldwide).
Pop songs didn't do well in the Hot 100 in 2004, just the same as massive urban songs can't do well in the Hot 100 today. But they're still big hits.
Rihanna's iconic songs are Umbrella, What's My Name? and Love the Way You Lie.
Being iconic isn't just about sales, it's also about impact, how unique and memorable the song is, etc. We Found Love spent 10 weeks at #1, but it didn't have the impact that Love the Way You Lie, Umbrella or Toxic did.
What are you talking about? We Found Love is a CLASSIC bop. They will be playing that song at Birthday Parties, Cookouts, Sporting Events, etc for years to come. As far as the Electro-dance craze goes We Found Love is one of the best songs to come out of this era.. Yall better keep trying to downplay Rihanna's significance.
People need to shut up about "promo" tbh. Radio airplay is the best form of promo. Live performances are nice, but they have only a tiny impact on sales compared to radio airpay.
If Brit had no promo for FF Rihanna didn't have any for TTT
"Talk That Talk:"

X Factor UK

The Grammy Awards
The BRIT Awards
Music Station (Japan)
American Idol (Finale)
Video Music Awards

That's more promo than all of Britney's eras in the past eight years combined had.
