Discussion: Have you ever experienced a Hurricane?

Well with all the talks of Hurricane Sandy coming my way, I have to be honest, I'm close to ******** my pants. I'm absolutely afraid of hurricanes..

Have you ever experienced one? if so, which one, and how was it?

I've only experienced one.. and probably another one by Monday/Tuesday.
I'm trying not to get myself all worked up though, because I had my clothes packed and everything by the door so I could evacuate ASAP if told to during Irene, but it really only turned out to be heavy winds and some rain..

Yeah, they always flood a couple sections of my town. I feel bad for all the people and businesses who live close to the river.

No, I live on the west coast.

BUT one time, in 2006 I think, there was a big subtropical windstorm with hurricane-force winds and several inches of rain.

It caused substantial damage to the city, namely power outages and trees knocked over.

However, I haven't experienced a true hurricane.

My dad lives in St. Croix. I often wonder what he and his relatives do when hurricanes come.

Yes, I have as I live in South Florida. I've lived through hurricane Andrew and it literally destroyed my neighborhood.

Lol, the flooding issues from all levels of rain storms are the reasons why most Florida homes don't have basements. I've never even seen a basement irl before

Me neither. Also Canadian. East coaster get hit often though.

Toronto had one in October 1954, Hurricane Hazel. That was a result of the hurricane/another low combining too. But I don't know anyone who remembers that. No one was prepared because no one believed it would hit us, they only though it would be gusty winds/a bit of rain. 81 people died from flooding.

I hear people host Hurricane Parties. Wonder what that's like
