Magnemite is a must. It can sail through the earlier gyms with ease, all with SonicBoom.
Sigilyph is also recommended.
Growlithe/Arcanine might seem like a nice idea, but Growlithe doesn't get any good moves until later on, and by that point, it'll be weak in comparison to your other Pokemon because you haven't evolved it yet.

But don't I get Vulpix instead of Growlithe in B2?
