Well, when she takes an extended vacation, the label will panic and have to find some other artist to promote till they're massive, since they'd have no other source of major income to leech off of.
I think Gaga benefited from coming out of the gate at a time when Nelly Furtado, Gwen Stefani and Fergie simultaneously put their solo careers on hiatus.
As much as labels describe themselves as "family," they're mainly corporations, and Interscope even almost went belly-up before.
I'm not saying they'd go as far as to drop her, but if she weren't such a financial asset, they wouldn't support her as much.
